The ARTistic Pursuits approach to teaching art is a welcome departure from typical art instruction books. This award winning homeschool art program meets the specific needs of homeschoolers at home. A variety of fun art lessons teach both the expressive and technical aspects of art while allowing children to make choices about what and how they will draw, paint, and sculpt. copied from site.
I was thrilled for the opportunity to review this product. ARTistic Pursuits has a wonderful reputation in the homeschooling community. I have always wanted to take an art history class and art class. Due to my lack of knowledge in art I have shied away from adding this to our curriculum. With ARTistic Pursuits I had art history and appreciation and techniques clearly introduced and explained in each lesson. Materials needed are listed in the beginning of the book. Because this book focuses on drawing we used watercolor pencils purchased at our local craft store. All of the materials were easy to obtain locally but you can order kits from the company.
This became a family art class! This book contains 16 units. Each unit starts with an introduction to a famous work of art that showcases the technique covered in that unit. Some of our favorites parts besides, learning to draw, were the historical tidbits about what was happening during the time the artist was creating the work showcased. We also liked the "try it" suggests such as picture a scene from your favorite story now try to draw scene and create a background.
This book is laid out to be covered in 32 weeks with 2 classes per week. We did not follow that schedule but used it as a supplement to our studies and as a way to incorporate family time away from the TV. This was enjoyed by my DS grade 5, and my DD grade 3.
I would definitely recommend this book as a history supplement for American history, art class, or to give direction to any student who wants to learn about art. The company offers wide array of art programs from preschool-high school. Awesome program!
